IRC Clients

Windows Clients

These clients are mainly for Windows95 and Windows 3.x - Most 32-bit Windows95 versions should work for WindowsNT also. Take caution to download the correct version for your version of Windows. 32-bit versions will usually only work on Windows95 or WindowsNT and a 32-bit WinSock (the default Windows 95/NT dial-up networking will work fine). 16-bit versions are made mainly for Windows 3.x and Windows for WorkGroups, even though some may work on Windows95. Most 16-bit versions also require a 16-bit WinSock (an example is Trumpet Winsock, most Windows 3.x dial-up packages have a 16-bit WinSock).

mIRC is one of the most popular and widely supported clients today. The most recent versions are shareware, fully functional, but asking that you register for a small fee if you continue use. Highly graphical and easy to use for the novice. Also includes scripting tools for even the most advanced user. One of mIRC's best features for the new user is it's highly developed help system accessed via the Windows familiar 'Help Menu'

Pirch is another graphical program that is also quite popular. It supports many features and is compatible with most IRC networks. If you don't like mIRC, definately check this out.

UNIX Clients

The clients below are for the various UNIX operating systems out there (Linux, BSD, etc). Most should generally work on any modern version and flavor of UNIX.

ircII is the long-time standard in UNIX and general IRC clients. Highly versatile and compatible with all major networks, anyone familiar with text-based chat will have little problem with ircII.

Download ircII from DALnet - See the file 00INDEX for each file's explaination.

BitchX is a fairly new and often updated client. If you are looking for a highly customized and newer looking client, be sure to give BitchX a look.

MacOS Clients

The software below is intended for use on Macintosh machines only. This includes the 'old' style Mac's as well as the new PowerPC's. Certain clients may or may not work on all systems. Be sure to look in the documentation on the client's homepage for more information.

The most widely used Mac client, IRCle has all the features that many like. Because it's so widely used, development and support still continue for this popular client. See the homepage for many documents on it's use and functions.

MacIRC, while still in beta versions, is probably the second most popular Mac client. If IRCle isn't what you'd like, give MacIRC a look.
